Understanding the Differences Between 3D and VR!

Understanding  3D and VR!

With the digital world developing so quickly, we are constantly bombarded by the appeal of new and different experiences. Movies are no longer only moving pictures, much like as games are not only watching a monitor and clicking the mouse. Taking into account a wide array of various digital experiences out there, it can sometimes be hard to understand the subtle differences between their concepts.

Difference Between 3D and VR

The 3D concept and its implications have been here for quite some time. It is a relatively old technology that basically uses a second layer of material (video, photograph, poster, etc.) in order to create depth for the observer. As our eyes see different areas of the world around us, after which the brain uses a combination of the two perspectives to give us a wider peripheral image, 3D uses this physical process of the human body to create the so-called third dimension.

By stacking a second video or photograph on top of the first one in a side-to-side or over-under format, 3D is actually tricking your brain into taking the view from each eye and creating an image that feels like it has layers and depth. This illusion of depth allows us to think something is moving towards us or gives us the feeling that we are a part of the movement. Instead of looking at a flat surface, you feel like there are additional angles in your perception.

VR or Virtual Reality, on the other hand, doesn’t only affect your visual perception, the key element is interaction. Instead of sitting in a chair with the occasional bounce to the left or right, VR requires to physically merge with what you are seeing. Unlike 3D, where you are only a viewer, VR makes you a part of a story, gives you a role and expects you to communicate with the digital reality. While watching through your VR glasses, a number of sensors follow your movement and respond accordingly. As you turn, run, wave and interact, the digital world follows you in every direction, giving you a real experience rather than just a story to look at. From a technical standpoint, 3D is actually a predecessor of virtual reality and since every VR form already offers the third dimension, it automatically consists of 3D, you just get the enhanced version.

Adding 360 to the Virtual Dimensions

As you do a bit of research of VR and 3D, you may notice a lot of mentions of 360. This is more of a technical possibility than a concept, as it can be applied to both 3D and VR. Before the digital era, 360 movies basically meant the cameraman rotated the whole 360 degrees to give you the view of what surrounds the actor. If he does it today in 3D, you get the previously mentioned circular view of the scene with depth. You can do it yourself by filming a video at hoe, rotating and later scrolling left to right to get the whole view of room. VR, on the other hand cannot be divided from 360, as it already uses it per default – you rotate and the digital reality follows you.
