Google Daydream View Review!
Google Daydream is a virtual reality platform designed and developed by Google to be used within its Android operating environment. It uses customised headsets and controllers to provide virtual reality functionality. This was an improvement to the initial Google Cardboard that had limited functionalities and capabilities; Daydream View platform includes hardware and software specifications that are compatible with most Android run smartphones. It was released in October 2016. This article reviews various functionalities of Daydream View including design and comfort, accessories, interface, performance and market competition. Buy here
Design and comfort
Unlike many virtual reality boxes, Daydream View has a touch of fabric lacing that provides a comfortable and stylish finish. The soft fabric covering makes it pleasant to touch and also drastically reduces its weight. It also has a simple hinged flap that enables an Android phone to be inserted easily and faster for a breathtaking virtual reality experience. Daydream View VR also has the capability to control light leaks that may be visible from its sideways. It also has a hand washable face pad in case it becomes dirty.
One of the undoings of this new technology is that it will only work with newer phones with specific components i.e. Pixel and Pixel XL, in its effort to broaden Daydream View capability, Google reached out to other hardware partners like Samsung, HTC, LG, ZTE, Asus, Huawei, Xiaomi and Alcatel to produce Daydream ready phones which can dedicate processing power to Daydream thereby reducing latency.
Daydream View headset has a built-in Bluetooth motion controller, which interfaces with the Android phone as you initiates a VR mode. The motion controller acts as a virtual laser pointer and it enables you to interact with objects while in VR mode. Apart from the motion controller, Daydream also has a trackpad thereby giving you two ways to interact with it.
Lack of content
Another undoing aspect of the Daydream View is the limited number of contents available in the store. At launch, Google only availed a couple of apps and games that were to be used within the Daydream View environment thereby restricting user’s experience. Notable apps that are currently available in the store include YouTube VR, Fantastic Beast and Washington Post among the available few.
Narrow Field of View
Google’s Daydream View has a narrow field of view which is about 90 degrees thereby greatly affecting its immersive news and quality of images displayed. On the other hand, Daydream View is also designed to work with different phone sizes and this may also compromise the size of the screen area.
Daydream View comes with a stylish tiny remote control with motion detection. This greatly adds interest and flavour to the gaming experience in virtual reality environment. The remote control also easily slides into a compartment in the headset to ease mobility. This Bluetooth-enabled remote control readily connects to the headset and has two buttons for adjusting volume and also a trackpad.
Specs and performance
Daydream View is compatible with the latest powerful Smartphones i.e. Google Pixel and Pixel XL that runs on Snapdragon 821 chipset that can easily handle 3D graphics in virtual reality environment, these high-end phones have long battery lives but tends to slow down with battery with prolonged usage.
Google Daydream View undercuts many VR headsets in pricing, apart from its reasonable cost, it has other cool functionalities that other major players don’t have, so it is a sure bet for the money.
Various players have been into the virtual reality field; actually, Google entered into the market after some established firms had come up with their own versions of Virtual Reality headsets. Notable competitors for Google’s Daydream View headset include Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and much more.
Finally, all these factors notwithstanding, it is highly expected that the Google’s Daydream View will be made compatible with many smartphones which are already in the market. It is also expected that once its development environment has been open to developers, many apps and games will be developed to give its users a variety of options to choose from thereby increasing its functionalities and capabilities.
