Samsung Gear Sport Smartwatch Preview.
At IFA 2017, Samsung revealed the Gear Sport, its newest smart watch. The Gear Sport is already being lauded as the sleekest, sportiest and most practical wearable product from Samsung. Here is our detailed SAMSUNG GEAR SPORT preview.
Similarities with previous Gear S3 watch.
Prior to the unveiling of the Gear Sport, Samsung’s flagship wearable was the Gear S3. At first glance, the new Gear resembles the Gear S3 because of its round clock face, its classy finish, and the recognizable rotating bezel. However, there are subtle differences between the two devices that are immediately apparent to most wearable enthusiasts. The gear sport had a smaller case, a thinner display, and a narrower strap than the S3. The new design is more compact by every physical measure, which makes for a better feel around your wrist.
Appearance, Design and Build Quality
Users will have a choice of two finishes: black and blue. However, the appearance of the Samsung Gear Sport is further customizable as buyers can choose from an assortment of colourful wristbands and straps. There are 23 different bands, made of leather, silicone, or fabric material. The rotating bezel, which is now a perennial feature of Samsung’s flagship wearable devices, is a handy tool for switching between apps.
The Gear Sport comes with a 1.2-inch super AMOLED display, which is comparable in quality to the Fitbit Ionic and the Apple Watch Retina. The 360 by 360 screen with 302ppi makes for the kind of vibrant visuals that you would expect from Samsung. The display is encased in a 42.9 mm housing, which together with the 20mm wide strap, makes for a petite, and aesthetically versatile wearable device.
The Gear retains most of its predecessor’s impressive features, including water resistance up to 5ATM or 50 meters, fitness tracking with multiple sensors, and GPS capabilities.
Features and Apps.
The Gear Sport runs the Tizen OS, and it contains new features that were not available in older Samsung wearable devices. Most notably, the Gear Sport can save offline Spotify playlists onto its 4GB of internal storage, allowing users to enjoy their favourite music on the go.
Samsung has its own S Health app that you can use to track your heart rate while swimming. You can also download a new Speedo app that has similar functions as those of the S Health app. The Speedo app can measure the number of calories you burn, your swimming speed, and your total swimming distance. You can also use popular sports apps such as Endomondo, MapMyRun, and MyFitnessPal on the Gear Sport.
The Sport is thoroughly integrated with many other products from Samsung. The data collected on your Gear can be accessed and analyzed on selected Samsung TVs. The watch can also be synced with Bluetooth headphones, which you can use to listen to your offline Spotify playlist. The watch doesn’t have onboard speakers as this would compromise its water resisting capabilities. The GPS feature on the watch works by relaying information through Wi-Fi. Finally, the watch is capable of receiving and answering calls from your smartphone.
The Gear Sport is clearly an improvement on the S3, and it has many new health-centric features from Samsung and other third party providers. Although Samsung has promised to upgrade the S3 in the future, the Gear Sport is currently the Samsung wearable to look out for.
